The jury of the Malta International Art Biennale 2009 was really impressed with the range of distinctive paintings incorporating visions of the world. The 1st prize went to Raphael Labro [France]. Labro was acknowledged for his style and impressions of ancient Goddesses of the region.

Born thousands of years ago in the Maltese Archipelago, the Good Luck Goddess is a contemporary version of the "Sleeping Lady", a clay figurine of exquisite craftsmanship found in a chamber of the Hypogeum, a sacred prehistoric megalithic underground temple on the Holy Mountains of Atlantis located what are Malta and Gozo today. Her spirit is resting in the hypogeum for the human race from planet Earth.

Meditating Goddess IV by Labroby JOSIANNE FACCHETTI

Raphael Labro, winner of the Malta International Arts Biennale 2009, is a French artist who lived all over the world before settling down in Gharb, Gozo. He says that Gozo is the ideal place for an artist to live and paint in. He became attracted to this island especially because of the Megalithic temples and the peaceful lifestyle. All these aspects are reflected in his exhibition of paintings entitled Gozopolitana the Rebirth, which can be viewed at 39, Mrabat Street, Sliema until 21 January from 7.30pm onwards.
