Artist, Photographer, Author and Visionary.
These are the words that sum up the genius found in the artist Raphael Labro and his new work in Contemporary Neo Expressionism Paintings.
"I am simply fascinated by ancient civilisations, and we are living in an archaeological paradise where Codex has still to be rediscovered." - Raphael Labro
The Maltese Stone circle temples and stone goddesses on the island of Gozo, Raphael Labro's chosen home, are the key inspiration to the work in this new exhibition of works titled "Rebirth". Raphael Labro celebrates the feminine symbol in his earthly to universal contemporary neo expressionist paintings. Combining the rich tones of Mother Earth with bright colours that invite the audience to make a journey that transcends the present. To a future that has no boundaries, that is reawakened, renewed and reenergized. A future where Earth and Universe meet. Where an enlightened mankind emerges. The Goddess is transformed from the round, fertile Earth mother to an ethereal messenger.
A consistent artistic eye melding the form and blending it into the surrounding landscape, recreating the bond between humankind and it's environment. A faithful and fitting homage to a Temple people who have been described by cultural anthropologists as having one of the most impressive and purist of cultures. Atlantean knowledge figures predominantly in Labro's interpretation of these impressive monuments and his belief that the Maltese temples are actually remains of an Atlantean Colony.
This is an important key to Labro's work and artistic and personal vision. For, as you move through the series of works, you find yourself journeying from the ancient past to the future, a reawakening of Mother Earth, the goddess spirit and the rebirth of an Atlantean utopia.
A rebirth to a culture that understands peace, harmony and an understanding and respect for our environment. This speaks to Labro's deep caring and concern for our planet. As he states "People today are not thinking in sync with nature. Reforest the land, trees are needed for the soil in order to encourage the water cycle."
In pieces such as Sleeping Goddess, Twin Goddesses, Sleeping Goddess under the Pleiades, Mother of the Earth we see the representation of the ancient stone sculptures set against the backdrop of the Maltese temples which Labro feels are actually the remains of an Atlantean Colony that disappeared at the time of the last major climate change about 12,000 years ago.
Considering that The Maltese Stone-circle temples have a direct connection to the Universe realized in 5 spiral-ring of our Galaxy as found in the perfect proportions and its harmonic number Phi this idea is very tantalizing indeed. Consider that the number of Phi is predominant in the movement of nature called Perfect proportions. And Labro has paid careful attention to the detail of the geometric perfection and beauty in all of these pieces. We see these stone goddesses as they were, one with the earth and aligned with the sky. As are the temples that aligned not only to the sun and moon, but to the Pleiades constellation as well.
Le long des lunes, Gemini IV, Maia Maiestas shows the change from stone depictions of round fertile women to a renewed form, lithe ethereal feminine spirits.
Transformed but still imbued with all the elements of nature, as seen in the choice of tones that Labro has used. A rich blend of all the hues of the earth, sky and solar system, Raphael touches the senses with the depth of colour, creating a vision of a surreal landscape imbued with heightened awareness. An utopic reawakening. Another fine touch is the gold lines you see in many of his paintings. This is another special touch by the artist that incorporates the golden sacred geometry the temple people had mastered so well. Again harkening back to the harmonics of Phi and the movement of Perfect proportions.
